Obituary For Twyla Louise Yeckley

Twyla Louise Yeckley
Feb. 17, 1932 – Feb. 14, 2026

Twyla Louise Yeckley, 93, of the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg, passed away Saturday after an extended illness. Born in Altoona, she was the daughter of the late Wilmer D. and Zoeolla (Diehl) Yeckley.
Twyla graduated from Hollidaysburg High School in 1949 and went on to study at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, earning her BS in Art Education in 1954, and her MS in English Education in 1967.
Her career carried her through classrooms in Hollidaysburg, Corning, N.Y., and Northern Bedford County before she returned to Hollidaysburg Junior High School as an English teacher and eventually as Department Head.
After retiring from public education, Twyla founded I Design, an interior design business she operated for 20 years. She later returned to education, teaching for nine years at the Huntingdon Learning Center, in McMurray, Pa., retiring in 2012.
She found joy in painting, reading and travel throughout her life.
Twyla was “adopted” into the family of her dear friend, Virginia Bowman, and became an integral part of Bowman family life. She was the beloved “Aunt Twyla” to Eric and Joshua, two of Virginia’s grandsons, who lived nearby in Pittsburgh and have cherished memories of their summer vacations with her.
Twyla was elegant, artistic and deeply loved. She will be missed by all who knew her.
A memorial service to celebrate Twyla’s life will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 21, 2026, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be directed to the Benevolent Care Fund of the Presbyterian Village at Hollidaysburg, 220 Newry St., Hollidaysburg, PA 16648.
Condolences may be made at www.stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com or Stevens Family Funeral Homes Facebook page.

Twyla and I were colleagues who taught at Hollidaysburg Senior High. And after she started her design company, she did all the window treatments in my new home. She was a perfectionist with an elegant, artistic bent. And she shared my love of reading. When she returned to Hollidaysburg, she joined my book club. I will always remember her smile, her red hair, and her fashionable attire. She was a unique and special person. - Karen McIntyre

She was a tough but fair teacher! She inspired me to read more books especially about the American Civil War! My Senior year I read Grant's Memoirs and wrote a book report which she approved. When I ran into her after High School about Hollidaysburg she would ask me; what are you reading? Ken Thomson Jr.

I have fond memories of Twyla growing up as a child. Her family and mine were related on my Father's side. And then I had her as a teacher in Junior High. She was always very fashionable and had a niche for decorating way back then.

To the Bowman family, Twyla thought of you all as family. I started at the home over 40 years ago, working with her and the auxiliary for years. She was one of a kind and I sure will miss here. She was one of the last Presbyterian homes lady. I will treasure all my memories of her. She was a very special lady. Yours truly. Penny Rupeka
