Obituary For MaryLou M. Suckling

MaryLou M. Suckling June 18, 1935 – April 11, 2023

MaryLou M. Suckling, 87, Mechanicsburg, formerly of Altoona, passed away Tuesday afternoon at Holy Spirit Hospital, Camp Hill. She was born in Howard, PA, daughter of the late Rev. Raymond and Helen (Twigg) Morris. On Feb. 12, 1956, she married Robert M. Suckling, who preceded her in death June 13, 2017. She is survived by three children: Kevin (Louise Burkholder) Suckling of Altoona, Scott (Lori) Suckling of Cornwall on Hudson, NY, and Lisa (Paul) Cronin of Harrisburg; five grandchildren: Jamin Morden, Nicole (Niiamah) Ashong, Chelsea Cronin, Matthew (Kara) Suckling and Kayleigh Suckling; three great-grandchildren: Aubree Washington, and Zavian and Zorelia Ashong; and many nieces and nephews as well as her brother Raymond (Tammy) Morris, Jr of Pinehurst, NC and sister-in-law Ruth Morris of Everett. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Dawn L. Morden and a grandson, Brian Morden. MaryLou was a 1953 graduate of Williamsport High School. She graduated from Methodist Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in 1956 and earned her Bachelor of Science in Public School Nursing from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She was a registered nurse at the Altoona Hospital and the school nurse at the Altoona School District. MaryLou was a former member of the First Lutheran Church of Altoona and the Zion Lutheran Church of Hollidaysburg. She was a life member and past President of the Altoona Hospital Auxiliary, a Paul Harris Fellow of Rotary International, past Mother Advisor and Chairman of the Board of Holliday Assembly #166 Rainbow for Girls, member of Daughters of the Nile, former member of the White Shrine, volunteer at the Altoona Hospital Gift Shop, former CONTACT volunteer, and a life member of the Hollidaysburg Chapter #471, Order of the Eastern Star, where she was Past Matron in 1962, a Page for Margaret S. Ray, PGM in 1963, District Deputy Grand Matron 1966-67, Sessions Banquet Chairman for Lois Summers, PGM 1970-71, Grand Chaplain of Pennsylvania 1976-77, Grand Representative to California and Scotland, Sessions member for Carolyn Burkhardt and Edith Lowans, Sessions General Chairman for Louella Coons, Chairman of Committees for AIM, ESTARL, TOP, and CANCER, and Member of Committees for Entertainment of Out of State Visitors and Committee to Study Redistricting. She was also a member of the Harrisburg Chapter #552, Order of the Eastern Star. Bob and Marylou enjoyed traveling to many different countries, including Austria, Germany, Great Britain, France, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Canada, Hawaii, Alaska, Venezuela, Falkland Islands, Argentina, Chile, Denmark, Norway, Estonia, Sweden, Russia, Canary Islands, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Aruba, Grenada, Barbados, Martinique, Curacao, Greece, Australia, Tahiti, Egypt, China, and Hong Kong, as well as many travels in the United States. MaryLou also enjoyed doing needlework, reading, bridge and pinochle, and spending time with her grandchildren. She enjoyed continuing her mother’s ministry of sending greeting cards to those in need of cheer. A service by the Hollidaysburg Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 21, 2023, at the Duncansville Evangelical Lutheran Church. Visitation will follow from 2 p.m. until the 4 p.m. funeral service, with Pastor Jaime Olson officiating. Committal will be at Presbyterian Cemetery, Hollidaysburg. Arrangements are by Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in memory of MaryLou, be made to the Brian Morden Foundation, 3002 2nd Ave., Altoona, PA 16602.
