Obituary For Kenneth "Ken" B. Smith

Kenneth “Ken” B. Smith March 14, 1946 - Dec. 11, 2020

Kenneth B. Smith, 74, Duncansville, passed away Friday at UPMC Magee, Pittsburgh due to Covid-19 pneumonia. He was born in Altoona, son of the late Boyd and Pauline L. (Foor) Smith. On March 10, 1973 he married Ruth M. Aungst. Surviving are his wife; two children: Kirk L. Hammel and Dana M. Richards (Ron); his one and only “favorite” granddaughter, Jenna Richards; a brother, Thomas L. Smith; and many special cousins. He was preceded in death by his brother, Richard Smith; his aunt Verna Smith; and his cousin “Brother”, Homer C. Smith, Jr. Kenneth was a 1965 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area High School. He was Hollidaysburg Alumni 2004 Football Team of the Year. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy aboard the U.S.S. New Jersey and was a Vietnam Veteran, serving from 1965-69. After his honorable discharge, Ken attended Danny Ward Horseshoeing School in Martinsville, Virginia. He enjoyed his job of 41 years of shoeing horses, specializing in shoeing show horses all over the east coast. The highlight of his career was shoeing at the Arabian National Horse Show. He enjoyed all his customers and many friends he met through the years. Ken enjoyed watching football, his horses, especially his horse, Boomer, and watching his granddaughter barrel race. He enjoyed his morning coffee talking with Lynn Johnston and his many “coffee crew” friends and visiting his Amish friends in Sinking Valley. Ken attended the Dry Run Independent Baptist Church. Services will be private at the convenience of the family. Interment will be at Carson Valley Cemetery. Arrangements are by Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg, PA.     My deepest sympathy on your loss. Kenny was my farrier for decades, starting in 1977 when I got my first horse. You could always count on his smile, his stories, and his warm belly laugh. He will be missed.
