George Byron Dangerfield Jan. 18, 1937 – Jan. 14, 2023

George Byron Dangerfield, 85, of Hollidaysburg, passed away peacefully Saturday at UPMC Altoona of complications from a cardiac arrest suffered on Jan. 12, 2023. He was surrounded by family and enfolded in love. He was born in Boston, Mass., son of the late Florence Eisenhardt Dangerfield and Albert Neil Dangerfield. His early years were spent in Haverhill, Mass. where his parents were teachers at Bradford Junior College. In his sophomore year, the family moved to Rockport, Mass., a town which would be special to him for the rest of his life. George attended Middlesex School in Concord, Mass. and Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., graduating in 1959 with a degree in mathematics and an abundance of life-long friends. In the summer of 1959, George married Carole Nelson of Rockport, Mass. They moved to Easton, Conn. where Carole taught junior high school and George worked for Warner Brothers. After starting a family, the call of Rockport and lure of the ocean brought them to an auction on Marmion Way, where they spontaneously bid on an oceanfront inn, and life as inn keepers of The Captain’s House B&B began. Together, they raised their daughter, Gretchen; and son, Geoffrey. They shared nearly 40 years of hospitality with guests from all over the world, and were known for their spectacular annual Kentucky Derby party. George worked for Gorton’s of Gloucester as Director of Information Systems, retiring at the young age of 52 to manage the Captain’s House while Carole became a star realtor until her death in 2003. Throughout his life George was an avid sports enthusiast, playing varsity baseball and football. He loved skiing throughout New England with his family and racing 210’s at East Point Yacht Club in Gloucester, Mass. George served on the Rockport School Committee and the Board of Mental Health for many years. He was an active member of the First Congregational Church and served on the “Old Sloop” Board as both trustee and treasurer. In 2004 he moved to Hollidaysburg, but continued to return to his beloved Rockport several times a year. George was a lover of life and an avid Red Sox fan. He loved art, good wine, Sudoku, a good manhatten and traveling around the world. He had a great memory and could recall places he had been with amazing detail. A devout Catholic, he was a member of St Michael the Archangel Church in Hollidaysburg. He was a generous man and gave to charities that are too numerous to list. Above all, George was a very caring man who enjoyed the company of his family and friends. He was always a support in time of need and stood for honesty and integrity. George was invigorated by his faith and he became a Catholic to accompany the love of his life, Meg, and to continue his strong belief in God. George is survived by his second wife, Margaret McGuirk (Dallas) Dangerfield; his daughter, Gretchen Parker and her husband, Tim; his son, Geoffrey Dangerfield; his stepdaughter, Heather Flynn, and her husband, Michael; and his stepson, Robbie Dallas; as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Carole (Nelson) Dangerfield; and by his sister, Barbara Duboc. “I don’t think there’s any point in being Irish if you don’t know the world is going to break your heart eventually. Friends will be received from 5 to 7 p.m. today, Jan. 17, 2023, at Plank Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 18, 2023, George’s 86th birthday, at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 301 Spruce St., Hollidaysburg, with Father Alan Thomas officiating.
