Obituary For David Roy Baker
David Roy Baker, 90, of Hollidaysburg, passed away from Covid on Monday, August 3rd, at UPMC Altoona, after a lengthy battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born in Reservoir, RD1 Hollidaysburg, February 6, 1930, the son of The late Roy and Freda (Wohlbruck) Baker. He married Janet Marie Fox on August 13th, 1990, in the Fern Grotto on the island of Kauai, Hawaii. Dave is survived by his wife; three daughters; Michele Lloyd (John) of Hollidaysburg, Shelly of New Castle, and Amy Burley (Greg) of Altoona, five grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews and his dogs, Mollie and Frosty. He was preceded in death by four brothers; James, Max, William and Richard, and a sister Adalene Hammel. Dave was a 1946 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School and a 1949 graduate of Williamson Trade School in Media, PA. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and flew 50 combat missions in B-26 bombers. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with two Oak Clusters. Dave retired in 1990 as a Supervisor of Material at Conrail after almost 40 years in the Stores Department. He then volunteered his time to a number of community agencies and events. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and was Past Commander of Hollidaysburg Post 7652 and Martinsburg Post 43. Dave’s love of travel took him to all 50 states and 9 foreign countries. He particularly enjoyed the RV lifestyle with his wife and dogs. He loved the outdoors and was restless when confined inside for any reason. And he especially enjoyed his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren. His final request for those he left behind: “When you read this, please don’t grieve for me. I have had an abiding curiosity all my life about what was over the next hill, and now, at last, I know what is over that final hill.” Due to Covid restrictions, a celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Williamson College of the Trades, 106 S Middletown Road, Media PA 19063 or to VFW Post 43, 115 South Nicodemus St. Martinsburg, PA 16662. Arrangements by Plank, Stitt and Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg. Condolences may be offered at stevensfamilyfuneralhomes.com or Stevens Family Funeral Homes Facebook.
