Benjamin E. Nelson Oct. 6, 1945 - June 24, 2021
Benjamin E. Nelson, 75, Duncansville, passed away Thursday afternoon at UPMC Altoona after an extended illness. He was born in Claysburg, son of Benjamin and Ruth (Pleacher) Nelson. On May 24, 1987, he married Mary C. Mann along the Raystown branch of the Juniata River. He is survived by his wife; his mother of Duncansville; four children: Amy of Olyphant, PA, Benjamin (Stephanie) of Hollidaysburg, Laurie of Altoona, and Jeremy (Betsy) of Hollidaysburg; 12 grandchildren; and a sister, Janice Kennedy of Duncansville. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin, and a grandson, Noah Benjamin. Benjamin was a 1963 graduate of Hollidaysburg High School. He was a self-employed landscaper and jack of all trades and had been a member of The Allegheny Club and The Duncansville VFW. He was a well-known and respected singer, songwriter, and bluegrass musician with The Grass Strings and Alder Creek bands, having recorded several records and appearing on television and radio. Benjamin was an ardent Steelers fan. He was an avid outdoorsman and nature lover. He enjoyed hunting arrowheads and camping. He was also a lover of history, especially local and Native American history and folklore. He was a group member of the North South Skirmish Association Civil War reenactment. Friends will be received from 3-6 p.m. on Tuesday, June 29, 2021, at Plank, Stitt & Stevens Funeral Home, 421 Montgomery St., Hollidaysburg.
